General Features of ZZULI
Zheng Zhou University of Light Industry (ZZULI) was approved by the State Council for construction in 1977. 1979 saw its first admission of students from across China. This university, which was initially subordinated to the National Ministry of Light Industry, next to the General Council of Light Industry and finally to the State Economic and Trade Commission, was taken over in 1998 by Henan Province as a university jointly managed by the central and provincial governments. With engineering as its mainstay, ZZULI has diversified into such fields as science, liberal arts, economics, management and law. Situated in the northern suburb of Zhengzhou City, ZZULI is adjacent to the Yellow River.

Favorably situated, ZZULI has a nice surrounding with all the buildings embedded in groves of trees and flowers. The total area of the university is 570,000 square meters, amongst which 400,000 square meters are construction areas. On the spacious campus are laboratory buildings for experimentations of electronics, control engineering, chemical engineering, food engineering and biological science. In addition, there are 32 collegial or departmental labs and centers like the Computing Center, Modern Educational Techniques Center, Network Center, Analysis Center, just to name a few. There are such advanced gymnastic facilities as the palaestra, the gymnasium, and the standard-sized swimming pool. This university also enjoys a classroom building that has the biggest capacity of students in Henan Province. In addition to the existing 700,000 volumes of books and some 1800 kinds of journals, the university library also has CD-based data base and net-work data base, which are accessible to the whole university by means of e-reading rooms, audio-visual rooms or the network that is wired to all the classroom buildings, laboratories, office buildings and the students¡¯ or teachers¡¯ residences. All these modern facilities provide a fertile soil as well as a good arena for the students to bring out their full potentials.

There 9 sub-colleges in this university and they are: Arts and Design College, Material and Chemical Engineering College, Life-education College, International Education College (IEC), Computer Software College, Eastern (international) College of Arts, Vocational Technology College, Light Industry Vocational College, and College of the Minorities. The 9 departments are:

Department of Electromechanical Science and Engineering, Department of Informatics and Control Engineering, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Department of Food and Bioengineering, Department of Management, Department of Foreign Languages, Department of Technical Physics, Department of Informatics and Computational Science, and Department of Law and Civil Affairs, and Department of Physical Education. There are 47 undergraduate specialties and 26 three-year undergraduate specialties shared among the various departments and colleges. The total number of students on campus is 20,000. Not only has this university many scrupulous and learned professors, but some young or middle-aged teachers who are now assuming the academic leadership role in this university. Of the 1,400 staff members, 270 are professors, associate professors and senior engineers. The university honor roll also includes 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 45 doctorial personnel, 5 provincial distinguished specialists, 2 winners of the Fund of Henan Creative Personnel, 4 winners of the Fund of Henan Outstanding Scientists. 1 candidate of the Hean Project for Creative University Talents, and 2 candidates for the Henan Project of Outstanding Creativity.

In recent years, ZZULI experienced a general elevation in its teaching and research capabilities by taking serious steps to implement ¡°the Compendium for China¡¯s Educational Reform and Development¡± and by relying on its vocational and subject superiorities. Since its qualification assessment conducted by the ex-National Education Committee in May 1997, ZZULI, with teaching quality as its chronic concern, took effective steps to improve or broadened such subjects as Electromotors and Electric Appliances, Applied Chemistry, Machinery Design and Control, Technology of Computer Application, and Food Science. The existing 14 master¡¯s degrees cover such subjects as Electromotors and Electric Appliances, Food Science, Material Science, Machinery Design and Control, Computer Application, Creative Arts, and Management.

At present, there are 13 subjects rank among the 1st class ones and 23 among the 2nd class, covering the fields of science, engineering, liberal arts, economics and law. Five groups of subjects with distinctions have formed. They are: the group of informatics, group of food and chemistry, group of mechanics and electrics, group of industrial arts, and the group of management. On the other hand, the university places a great importance on scientific research and development, and has achieved very good social or financial benefits. In recent years, ZZULI had some 200 national research items and more than 70 won national or provincial prizes. Programs such as the Research of Spice and Essence, Fuzzy Control Technology, and Galvanization of Stainless Steel have not only had some positive and fruitful attempts in an effort of industrialization, but have been offering long-term technical support for such enterprises as Xin Fei, Haier, Xiao Ya, Xing Xing, the Great Wall, as well as Di Hao, which are mostly giant manufacturers of electric appliances.

Clinging to its educational philosophy of ¡°solid foundation, compatibility of subjects, multi-orientation, good competence, and high quality¡±, ZZULI has launched a system of dual academic degrees, and double supervision system as well, which help greatly to the elevation of the students¡¯ general qualities. Students of this university are well received by society for their practical skills and creativity. The initial employment rate of 85% has been kept since 1997. The 100% ultimate employment rate suggests that students from this university are welcome to society. Over 20,000 students have graduated from this university, and many of them have become well known specialists, scholars or administrative personnel. They took their roots in the fertile soil of ZZULI and brought glory and fame to their Alma Mater in return.
By cultivating a healthy and uplifting teaching and studying atmosphere, ZZULI has won many glorious titles as Civilized Unit of Zhengzhou City, Civilized University of Henan Province, and National Excellent University for Martial Training, all this in turn pushes the campus civilization to even a higher level.

In terms of joint educational programs by utilizing domestic and international recourses, ZZULI has been in the leading position in Henan Province. Friendly ties have been formed between ZZULI and universities of the United States, Russia, Ukraine, Japan and Australia. There are regular academic exchanges and staff exchanges. While many foreign experts are invited to this university, specialists and scholars of ZZULI go out of China for some research activities or for further education.

At the threshold of the new millennium, Zhengzhou Institute of Light Industry is vigorously exerting its reformative efforts by aiming at the pre-set targets of the 10th ¡°five-year Scheme¡±. Self-motivated efforts are being taken to construct a system in which the education of students is geared to social demands. Parallel to this system is a favorable circumstance dedicated to the cultivation of the students¡¯ creativity and practical abilities. ZZULI is making its headway toward a university of superiorities, with engineering as the mainstay and a balanced development of specialties of science, liberal arts, economics, management and law.
